Unless you live in a cave, under a rock, or in an Afghanistan bunker, you've probably heard about the 2004 documentary "Super Size Me." This fascinating film follows director Morgan Spurlock as he embarks on 30 days of eating nothing but McDonald's cuisine while exploring the obesity issue plaguing America. The humorous, yet thought-provoking documentary was lauded by critics and audiences and deservedly earned an Academy Award nomination (unfortunately, it lost out to "Born into Brothels," which I hear is a good film, but nowhere near as interesting or entertaining).

Morgan has parlayed the success he garnered from the big screen and has created a documentary television series for FX. "30 Days" takes the "Super Size Me" concept with a broader scope: examine what it's like to live someone else's life for 30 days. Each episode follows someone who puts their daily routine on hold for a month and slips into the shoes of a different lifestyle. For example, within the first few episodes we are treated to a peek of what it would be like to be a devout Christian living as a Muslim, and a Midwestern homophobe living in the heart of gay culture in San Francisco's Castro District (both of which sound like damn interesting premises).

Always being one to volunteer himself for human experiments, Morgan took on the challenge for the premiere episode, and dragged his fianc�½e, Alexandra (Alex) Jamieson, along for the ride. The mission was to see what it would be like to live off minimum wage salaries for 30 days. So, after Morgan and Alex attended the 2005 Academy Awards, they left their comfortable lifestyles in New York City and moved to Columbus, Ohio for a (temporary) life of poverty. Ohio was selected because the state was a good representation of the hardships facing America today, in that it has lost 250,000 jobs over the past 4 years (yikes!).

Going into this experiment Morgan set three rules they had to follow: each of them would hold a minimum wage gig, all their credit cards and bank accounts were to be frozen for the duration, and each would start out with cash equaling one week's worth of minimum wage job pay (that's $206, but just $178.47 after taxes). I don't know about you, but just the thought of slaving away at a full-time job but still living below the poverty line, is enough to make this (relatively) spoiled boy avoid this little test like the plague. Fortunately for us, Morgan and Alex are troopers and sacrificed themselves for the sake of opening some eyes.

The maiden day of Morgan and Alex's adventure was dedicated to finding a place to live. After a day of searching over-priced hovels, they settled on a dirty, ant-infested dump of an apartment situated above a crack den in an area called the Bottoms (just the name of the district should convey how shabby the living arrangements were). For $325 a month, you get what you pay for, I guess. They were lucky enough to find an understanding landlord who allowed them to pay just $200 upfront and make payments on the remaining $125 of the rent and the $325 security deposit (something tells me the landlord normally isn't that agreeable, but made some concessions when he saw the TV cameras). The place is filthy, freezing and lacking furniture, but what the heck; it's a roof over their heads.

Day two brought on the search for jobs. Alex ended up with a position bussing tables and washing dishes in a coffee house (which is an improvement over the big sacrifice this vegan chef would have had to make if she settled for one of the fast food jobs she applied for), and Morgan signed up with a temp agency that would hook him up with day laborer assignments. It was actually kind of cute to see how excited these two got when they reunited at the end of the day and shared their (good?) news of employment.

Throughout the month, the day-to-day grind of each of our subjects begins to wear on them. Alex is tired, cold and grumpy, and Morgan is feeling a little deflated because he works an 11-hour day and brings home just $45.26! After taxes he made about $4.20 an hour, well below minimum wage even though he was "making" $7.00 an hour. To make matters worse, each of them needed a trip to the emergency room (her: urinary tract infection; him: wrist damage from a landscaping gig) and take on the charges since neither has health insurance. This is where things got comical (a little sarcasm for ya) - Alex's hospital bill of $438 included a $300 charge for just for using the emergency room, whereas Morgan faced a bill of $779, including $551 for walking in the door and $40 for medical supplies, which was a simple, average, everyday ace bandage... utterly ridiculous. One can only hope that exposure like this will shed some light on the travesty that is our health care system and something will be done about it (yeah right, and monkeys may fly out of my butt).

To further complicate this voyage through poverty, Morgan takes on a second job in an attempt to pull in more greenbacks, but ends up straining his relationship with Alex because he is gone for 18 hours a day. Couples who make $25,000 per year, or less, are twice as likely to divorce as those making over $50,000, so it's no wonder many people take on extra jobs to make ends meet. Problem is, working the extra hours for the extra money, means less time at home with the family... the ultimate Catch 22. Morgan and Alex even "borrowed" his niece and nephew for a couple of days during the experiment, and the extra financial strain brought on by children was mind boggling. This single guy and father of none (other than two cats and one plant) cannot imagine trying to survive in these circumstances (again, thank you Morgan and Alex for doing it for me and conveniently putting it on my TV so I can live vicariously).

Intermingled with the daily doings of their new lives, Morgan shared some nuggets of information that were probably new and thought-provoking to many in the viewing audience. A couple of these facts really piqued my attention. Firstly, the federal minimum wage standard of $5.15 an hour has not changed since 1997. The cost of living has skyrocketed during that timeframe, though the law that was designed to keep citizens out of poverty is not changing with it. Every year Senator Ted Kennedy sends a bill to Congress seeking a raise to the minimum wage, and every year it is defeated because it is believed that the increase would force employers to cut jobs. While Congress continues to stomp on the little people, they have seen fit to approve $27,000 salary increases for themselves... utterly ridiculous, yet again.

Secondly, and on a more positive note, I learned that there are actually kind people in this world (watch the news on a daily basis and you'll tend to think otherwise). When Morgan and Alex grew weary of sitting on the floor to eat with the ants, they looked into organizations that provide assistance for the needy. It turns out Columbus has a network of charities that aid the working poor with basic living needs. Within walking distance of their slum...er... I mean apartment, is the Westside Free Store, church-run store where everything is totally free. Steve Rodgers is the founder of the Free Store, and collects donations such as toys, clothes, dishes, furniture, food/snacks, etc. for those who cannot afford such basic pleasures on their meager salaries. It is truly inspiring to see people with kind hearts treat citizens with the respect they deserve... something the government seems to know nothing about. If you find yourself inspired, you don't have to live in Columbus, Ohio to help those in need. It can be done from the comfort of your own computer on web sites like SwapThing.com, which has a donation program called ShareThing that allows users to give to charitable organizations and receive a tax-deductible receipt in return - a win-win situation for everyone.

In the end, Morgan and Alex survive their ordeal (I classify it as an ordeal by the time they get to the finish line) with their sanity and relationship intact. I won't pretend to be the most socially conscious individual on this planet, but this series did open my eyes and I can only hope it opened the eyes of many others; enough to demand some changes and get on the right track to putting an end to poverty. Morgan and Alex, you are brave souls... thanks for taking one for the team, and here's to hoping more comes from it than an entertaining hour of television.

Regardless of what sort of writer you are and how much you love to write, there are probably days when you'd rather clean ditches than face another blank page.

As writers, we face common challenges; staying motivated and confident, avoiding "writer's block," and meeting goals (on time!) are some of the toughest. Here is some of the best practical advice I've come by, or discerned myself, for becoming and remaining productive, creative, and content while traversing the writer's path. Try implementing these "Five Golden Rules" and see if they work for you.

Golden Rule #1: Avoid dwelling on past work: get on with it.

This is maybe the most important, and most difficult to follow of the Golden Rules. There is actually a subset of rules under this category, since there are many ways to "dwell" and many things to dwell on. Take heed, then, that thou shalt never:

* Stop writing for a time because you received a discouraging rejection letter. Whether or not you've been published yet, mark a file folder "Acceptance Letters" and expect to fill it eventually. Your day will come.

* Stop writing for a time because you've completed something or because you've had an acceptance. There is a tendency to relax, to say: "Ah, I've done it." Savor the moment, sure; but don't get overly lazy with your writing. Move on to your next project.

* Reread every sentence, paragraph, etc. after you've just written it. Learn to disengage your "editor" self until the work is finished -- you'll be much more efficient and prolific this way.

Golden Rule #2: Accept rejection gleefully!

Well, maybe not "gleefully." But it is true: you can learn from rejections. Therefore:

* Test your work on other writers you admire and listen to what they bring up, both the compliments and the criticisms.

* If you receive a rejection letter that contains comments on why your piece was turned down, read it, file it, and think about it; decide if you should edit the work some more before sending it out again. Chances are if the editor took the time to write a note to you, they saw some kind of potential in your work -- that's the next best thing to being accepted!

* Finally, remember that you must study your markets carefully, and be selective about what article, story, etc. you send to what publication. Rejection might simply indicate that you sent your work to the wrong place.

Golden Rule #3: Keep track of everything ... everything.

If you are sending stuff out to editors, you must keep track of what you send, where you send it, and when you send it.

One good way to keep a log is to create a table, either with your word processor or by hand, with columns marked for: 1. Title of work or query; 2. Title of journal, magazine, etc. you sent to; 3. Date sent; 4. Date accepted or rejected (mark A or R, date); 5. Other places the work was sent.

* Make sure not to leave out 5, since you don't want to waste time re-sending a piece to somewhere it has been turned down. You might want to mark beside 2 how long you expect to wait for a reply, if you have this information.

* Print off extra copies of your cover letters and keep them in a file with the submitted pieces attached.

* You might also want to log how many hours you spend writing each day, week, etc., to help keep you honest.

* Organize your correspondence, research materials, notes, and other important documents and keep them in handy portable file boxes.

Golden Rule #4: Write about what interests you.

Everyone has heard the sermon about writing "what you know." It's good to keep in mind, however, that what you don't yet know can be learned, through research or contact with other people.

* As long as it interests you, it's a topic worthy of pursuing. Go to the library and look it up;watch a documentary; conduct interviews with experts; listen to people's stories, memories and impressions. Then write.

* If it bores you silly, but you feel you should write about it because: (a) it's a marketable subject/theme; (b) someone has asked you to write about it; (c) everyone else is writing about it; or (d) nobody else is writing about it -- go ahead, if you'll receive proper compensation for your boredom. If not, leave it alone.

* If your subject excites you tremendously, but seems to bore everyone else, you can: write it anyway because it's good for the soul; scour the publishing world for a suitable market, since there's bound to be someone who shares your (possibly obscure) interest; or slant your article/story to suit a particular publication.

Golden Rule #5: Stare at the wall; drink some coffee; scribble.

You can substitute the ceiling, some tea, and doodling if you wish. As long as you get away from the work for a bit to relax, ponder, daydream, pet the cat. "But that's a waste of precious time," you say. Not true. On the contrary: you can't ignore this rule and expect to flourish as a writer. Why? Because "goofing off" actually serves to fuel your imagination and restock your creative resources. You can't expect to function physically without sleep, right? Likewise, you can't expect to function as a writer unless you occasionally . . .

* Do other creative things, whether you're "good" at them or not. Make a cartoon with stick figures. Try watercolors. Take a dance class. Improvise a song while you shower.

* Move around. You'll notice that your mind tends to go numb at about the same point your butt does: that's your signal to get up and take a walk outside, wrestle with the kids, do Tai Chi, whatever. Just move.

* Is there a character in your story whose been giving you grief? Maybe you haven't gotten to know her properly yet, or she you. Invite her to shuffle about your brain while you peel potatoes and ask her a few questions -- you'll be surprised at how agreeable she becomes.

* Get out of the house! Or office. Cabin fever is a continuous occupational hazard for writers, but you don't have to succumb: get together with friends, or simply be around other people in a public place.

There you have them, the golden rules. Maybe you knew them already -- at least intuitively. I find, however, that it's good to be explicit about how we structure and govern our writing lives. Without rules to live by, and goals to strive for, our art suffers -- languishes from lack of discipline and drive. So buck up and commit the rules to memory, recite them once a day. And write, write, write!

Was the request six months ago, a sixtieth birthday party, the client said. It got me thinking. There is a whole untapped market out there for people who lived as teenagers and twenty somethings through the sixties and seventies. They are all coming up to this big sixtieth birthday date and they all love the kind of music I love to play and earn my living out of! More than that, their kids are off their hands, their mortgage is paid up and they can afford to splash out on a big celebration.

That isn't the real reason for writing this article, in fact it has very little to do with the subject which is about the day in the life of a working professional London musician. It did get me thinking, however, how things have changed from my own youth. When I was young, sixty-year-old men smoked untipped fags, wore flat caps and suits and listened to Max Bygraves. Now the average sixty year old will be a fan of Wilson Pickett, Otis Reading, James Brown and The Stones and be dressing in Gap. He or she will definitely not be a smoker!!

The engagement was in West Sussex, a lovely part of the world, in late June. The weather was perfect as I loaded up the car. For a soul band music gig you need amplification and some lighting as well as a cd player for keeping the music and atmosphere going for when the band takes a break. I picked up my bass player Andy mid afternoon, and we drove down together to the sixtieth birthday party. Andy is no stranger to soul band work. He was musical director a few years ago to the Flirtations, a sixties Motown soul music band who had three or four hits back in the nineteen sixties. A very experienced and talented musician Andy has also worked with Van Morrison, Phil Collins and Eddie Reader as well as 1980`s swing band Wall Street Crash. Being a close friend for twenty-five years the trip down to the party was a pleasure. Good company, good conversation, lovely weather and countryside and the anticipation of a very rocking gig with some great players!

As usual we arrived early. The party we were playing soul music for were still having dinner and would be at least another hour. That was fine with us as the venue of the party was delightful. The person who's sixtieth birthday it was had arranged drinks for us and so while we brought the musical gear in to the venue a pot of tea was rustled up for us. Over a brew and the gear sitting outside the function room, we decided on what order the soul music for the party should take. There is no point playing the real lively soul music tunes too early on. A group of sixty year olds with full stomachs are not going to appreciate being coerced into getting down to Mustang Sally by a full on soul band after a big rich pud! The party is always best started with some more laid back soul music by people like Al Green and Ben E King.

The other musicians from the band start to arrive and bring their gear in. There is still time for a cup of tea and we order it for them whilst guitars and drums are brought into the hotel. Shortly the room begins to clear. The sixty-year-old birthday boy is obviously keen to party and doesn't want to waste time on speeches! As the guests make their way to the bar, go out for a smoke (the young ones...they'll learn) or take the lovely Sussex evening air, the band dives in and sets up the gear for the party. We meet the host who insists on describing, in detail, a gig he went to in the sixties featuring Stax star Otis Reading who was a master of the soul music genre and a legend in soul music. We are torn between setting up on time and listening to some one recount their memories of a legend! Being a big fan myself I am able to recount a few memories of my own of seeing the Blues Brothers soul and blues band with legendary players Booker T, Steve Cropper and Duck Dunn. These guys are soul music legends too, having played and written the hit "Green Onions" and having backed Otis Reading and Sam and Dave on many of their live gigs both in London and America. Steve Cropper was also the writer of "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay", "Knock on Wood" and "In the Midnight Hour", all soul music tunes we play in our soul band as part of our set and tunes we intended playing for the sixtieth birthday party that very night.

The band is set, the lights are on and we have started our evening's entertainment. There are already a few people on the floor dancing to that great Bill Withers tune "Lovely Day" and it makes me realize that people who were growing up in the sixties are much more in tune with live music and are used to dancing to a live band than the current generation. What also hits home is how the generation of today, when they get the opportunity to listen to a great soul band playing great soul music, get caught up by the music we play and respond so well to it. It makes me realize that bands such as mine will be playing soul music for a party like this and like we do for younger persons weddings, long after current musical trends die.

The evening progresses, the soul band picks up in tempo, the horns are riffing those familiar riffs from such favourites as "Hold on I`m Coming," "Dancing in the Street" and "I Feel Good". I always kid Mark our main singer and master guitarist when he sings "I Feel Good" by James Brown. James Brown is in his mid seventies, American and black. Mark is white, in his forties and from Scunthorpe! At the end of the tune I say what I always say....it always gets a laugh..."Its like James Brown was in the room!"

The audience is hanging in there with us. Drenched in sweat and transported in time, they are back in the Flamingo in Soho or some other sweaty dive of their youth. I look round and the boys in the band are having a ball. We are working real hard; we are sweating more than the audience. To make a band like ours rock as hard as it does requires a great deal of energy. Soul music isn't music played off the back foot; it is high-energy music that drives. As such, whether it is loud or quiet, it requires total commitment and all ones physical resources. An amateur band just doesn't cut it. They are unable to give the energy coupled with the sense of groove that good soul music requires. It needs relentless practice of ones instrument, high energy all evening that cannot drop...in fact it must increase as the evening progresses and a lot of stamina that only constant work on your instrument gives you.

Before we know it the night is over. We manage to persuade the birthday boy, after two encores, that it is time to finish. He is delighted with the band and the soul music we have played for his party. A few of his guests have come up for business cards. They too have sixtieth birthday parties coming up and they too love their soul music!!

We have been paid and the gear has been packed away. We are debating whether to employ a roadie at the moment. Everyone in the band loves playing soul music for a party but no one likes to cart gear! The funny thing is this. Every year technology makes musical gear lighter but somehow every year the gear feels slightly heavier!! As you, me, everybody, gets nearer to his or her sixtieth birthday party I suppose everything gets just that little bit heavier!

We say our goodbyes. Hugs and handshakes. You wouldn't believe that we see each other on average two or three times a week! On the way home we leave the radio off. It is time for quiet reflection. We discuss the gig. What went well. How we could improve the set order. We decide we can`t. What new tunes we want to incorporate into our soul music band party repertoire. This isn't easy. The most important criteria is to get people up dancing. There is sometimes a conflict between favourites and the sort of tunes, which will fill the floor for the party. This is always our main priority. It is what we get paid for. Paid well for. We have a reputation to maintain.

Andy has been dropped off. It is two o'clock. I am home fifteen minutes later. The gear is brought into the house. Must look into getting that roadie!

On goes the computer. Must check my emails. June and July are a busy time. Just as I thought. Three pressing messages that require an answer. Get to bed at three thirty. Please God don't let the kids wake me up before ten on Sunday morning. I'll need to be up then as the band are in Birmingham in the evening doing another soul music party and the M6 can be murder at this time of the year.

The kids come jumping into our room at eight thirty! It doesn't matter. Monday I am totally free. I can get them off to school and come home and sleep. Someone once said " If you can earn your living doing what you love you will never do a days work in your life" How true.

As usual, I walked into the Starbucks for my morning coffee.

Enjoying my morning coffee in Starbucks has been a routine since a year back. Now, everything in that particular Starbucks seems so familiar. Even the customers looked similar.

Just as I was walking to my favorite table with my warm coffee, I notice a lady meddling with her personal computer while sipping her drink. I took a glance and swore that face looked familiar. Anyway I thought my memory might not have fully awakened and so continued my walk towards my table. Now, I sat facing straight to this demure lady and suddenly it struck me, she was a well-known internet marketer, let's call her My Rich Mum. I was planning to start my own e-book business and have been surfing for more information and her picture always seems to pop up in e-book sites.

I knew I needed a mentor like Rich Mum if I wanted to start a successful e-book business. I was usually a shy person but at that moment, some part of me told me to get my back off the seat and walk towards her. Well, I did just that. I approached Rich Mum and started a conversation. I introduced myself and told her

I was planning to start an e-book business and asked if she had any tips or advice. All she did was to pull a card out of her purse and told me to only open the card when I reached home. The "namecard size" card was wrapped in a light blue wrapper. Rich Mum then wrote her personal contact number on the back of the card and told me to read, adsorb and understand the contents of the card. Her instructions were for me to understand the contents and to call her the day after.

Not knowing what else to do, I thanked her and went back to my now cold coffee.

That day after work, I went home all excited, ready to unveil the contents of the card. As I carefully removed the beautiful blue wrapper, I saw the contents of the card:

That was all the contents on the card, simple and logical and yet so divine. I started to break down the contents one by one and tried surfing the internet for more information and voila, that was it. The 5 steps are all I need for my e-book business.

I couldn't wait until the day after; I had to call Rich Mum the following day for a meet up. I wanted to know what the contents meant to her. Rich Mum, being the kind lady she was, agreed to meeting me for lunch. This time, I armed myself with a new pen and notepad.

Finally at 1.30pm, I got to meet Rich Mum again. This time, she started her speech with a serious tone: "Jay, if you wish to understand more about the contents on the card I gave you, you will have to pay me $1000." I wrote Rich Mum a cheque on the spot. Hey, she was a famous internet guru and people would pay up to the thousands for by the hour consultation.

Soon we were discussing about e-books and I was busy trying to jot down everything she said, word for word, sentence for sentence.

The moment came when she started to explain the contents on the card she had gave to me earlier the day before. This was it, I specifically told Rich Mum to speak slower. (My hands were tired by now!) The following was what Rich Mum said exactly:

"Choose my topic

This is where most people would take tons of time during their creation of their e-book business. Trust me, people climb onto the e-book wagon with only one objective in mind, making as much money as possible. Your first priority should be adding as much value as possible, when you do that, people will automatically part their money with you. Before you plunge into choosing any topic, always ask yourself the following questions:

"What do I do for a living?"

"What are the types of knowledge I have?"

"What am I interested in?"

"Are there secrets I have that people might be very interested in?"

The above questions should lead you to adding value to a certain group of people and earning money at the same time.

Write my e-book

Once you have the above step covered, once you already have your topic, writing your e-book should be a breeze. You do not need distinctions in English to write an e-book. People love e-books which are written in a more casual tone and not a stern go by the book tone. I always create my table of contents first, and then simply proceed to elaborate on the points I wish to bring forth. It's really that simple. After completing that e-book, I almost always convert my e-book into a PDF file, so that more eyeballs will be able to read it. The PDF format is friendly with most desktop platforms.

Please always format sentences to be of 1.5 spacing and try to use larger fonts. This is because of the fact that it is always harder to read on the computer screen as compared to a hard copy.

Your e-book website is not going to be a complicated website full of programming jargon. All you really need is two important pages, namely the Sales Page and the Thank You Page. The sales page will be where you show visitors your sales letter; it is the showcase of your e-book business. Why is it that oats are associated with sex?

I've read somewhere that eating oats increases the amount of testosterone in the blood thus raising your libido. I don't know about that, but one thing is for sure; the reason why many people experience a low libido is simply because they are knackered!

Being tired all the time is one of the most common wellbeing complaints of our age. No matter how much sleep you get, you just can't seem to make it through the day without a struggle. So you reach for an additive-laden, sugar-packed snack or drink which actually makes the situation worse in the medium to long term. And come bedtime, you are irritable, possibly bloated from a heavy dinner eaten too late and exhausted. Is it really any wonder you don't feel that amorous?! And never mind your sex life; your work, relationships and general health and wellbeing will all be feeling the effects of constant tiredness and the situation could well lead to depression.

cycle, rather than going for the quick fix sugar snack, you'd be a whole lot better off simply eating more foods which boost metabolism and sustain energy levels. Metabolism boosting nutrients include vitamin C, magnesium, zinc, iron and co-enzyme Q10. The most important nutrients required for energy levels are the B Complex group of vitamins. Energy slumps may be a symptom of weak adrenal gland function which is often caused by a deficiency in B vitamins.

So what foods offer all of the above?

Unrefined grains are a good source of complex carbohydrate, fibre, B vitamins, vitamin E, calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, zinc, copper and selenium. As a result, they fit the Energy Food bill perfectly.

It's very important to make the distinction between processed/refined and unrefined grains.

White rice, white bread, white pasta, processed cereals etc have been stripped of most of their nutrients during the refining process. The sugar rush into the blood system that they cause is not good for maintaining blood sugar levels or for preventing sugar cravings, mood swings and weight gain!

There are many unrefined grains that you could include in your diet to make it healthy; brown rice, millet, quinoa, pot barley, buckwheat groats, rye, spelt, teff and good 'old fashioned' oats.

Oats contain more good fats (EFAs) than other grains. Remember, these help you lose weight not gain it. They are packed with energy nutrients and will keep your blood sugar at a more constant level which will aid concentration and alertness. In G is for Ginger, I explained what the Spleen does and how to strengthen it; oats was one of the foods on the list.

Oats are one of the oldest breakfast foods going. There is evidence of porridge-like dishes going back to prehistoric times and Anglo Saxons apparently ate a dish of rye and barley meal with oats which they sometimes added vegetables to. Hannah Glasse's "The Art of Cookery made Plain and Easy" from 1747 gives a recipe for 'Water Gruel' which was basically oatmeal and water with butter and pepper.

These days, many people skip breakfast altogether (a big 'no-no') or simply grab a slice of toast or a bowl of processed cereal and then wonder why they are hungry or tired by mid-morning. If you are one of those who skip breakfast because you feel sick first thing in the morning, please believe me when I say that the nausea will pass quickly if you eat! And an oats-based 'brekky' is one of the best options. (If you need to avoid gluten, choose buckwheat groats which also makes a delicious 'porridge'.)

There is a misconception that porridge takes ages to cook. It doesn't, it takes just 6-7 minutes. But if washing up an entire saucepan is the problem, then eat your oats raw in a muesli. I alternate between porridge and my own blend of muesli.

I make my porridge with water only (no milk) and flavour it with cinnamon, nutmeg and raisin syrup which I make by blending some raisins in a little warm water. For my muesli I place organic jumbo oats, sunflower, flax and pumpkin seeds, a handful of almonds and some raisins in the food processer and blend until its broken down a little. Again instead of milk I just use water, but you could leave the almonds out at the blending stage and use them instead to make almond milk or cream. And how about adding fresh berries too?

Burn to Earn!!  Turn your CD Burner into a Cash Register!

The data on your hard drive is the most critical item inside your computer, and the only item which can not be replaced. It may be an unwanted hassle and expense to replace a defective memory module, monitor, or processor, but there is no replacing data once lost.

In addition to the possibility of a simple hard drive failure, the threat of internet borne worms and viruses has become an increasing risk to data loss or corruption. Although you may not be able to provide absolute protection to your hard drive, there are various ways that you can ensure that the data on your hard drive is protected. Five methods of backing up your data are summarized below...

1. USB Flash Drives

Although I am not recommending that flash drives be used for the actual data storage, they are a convenient means of transferring data from one computer to another. Important files can be quickly loaded onto a device such as the MINIDISK-512-DGRY-CS USB 2.0 Flash Drive, and transported to another computer for safe keeping. Installation and operation is extremely simple, and other than perhaps having to install a software driver, the use of a USB flash drive is a matter of having an available USB port on your computer. Just about every computer produced over the last several years has USB ports included, with more modern systems supporting the USB 2.0 standard. USB 2.0 allows for data transfer rates of up to 480 MB/s, which is a tremendous improvement over the original USB speed limit of 12 MB/s, and allows a user to fill their drives with data in a relatively short period of time.

Although the storage capacity of flash drives has increased greatly over the last year or so, users are still limited to common sizes of 512MB and 1GB. Mass storage is obviously not an option, but even 512MB may be enough to backup your "My Documents" folder, several albums of MP3s, or other important files to be stored elsewhere.

2. CD and DVD Writers/Re-Writers

The falling prices of CD and DVD writers/re-writers have made them a staple of just about every modern computer. These devices can typically be found installed in a computer case, but external devices supporting USB 2.0 or Firewire are available for greater flexibility and ease of installation.

A combination drive, such as the NU Technology DBW-521, will provide the user a high speed CD reader/writer, as well as a DVD reader, for under $40. The extremely low price of the drive (and the blank media) makes for an inexpensive means of creating data backups, and the re-writable media increases the convenience by allowing the same disc to be erased and reused many times. The main limitation of using a CD writer for data backups is that the discs are generally limited to a capacity of 700MB per disc. Not nearly enough for a full backup, but adequate for archiving key files.

The popularity of DVD writers/re-writers has surged thanks to dropping prices, and they are pushing the stand alone CD burner towards extinction. DVD media affords the user far more storage capacity than a CD, and DVD burners can generally burn CDs as wells as DVDs. The recent availability of double layer DVD burners, such as the Sony DW-D22A-DO-N, represents a large boost in the capacity of writable DVDs, taking the previous limit of 4.7GB per disc and nearly doubling it to 8.5GB.

With proper storage, CD/DVD media can provide long term storage that can not be jeopardized by hardware failure.

The data on a CD or DVD can easily be read by just about any computer, making it a good choice for archiving files that aren't excessively large.

3. External Hard Drives

As the name might imply, external hard drives are generally the same type of drive you might find inside your system, but housed in a smaller, external enclosure of its own. The enclosure will feature at least one data interface (such as Firewire, USB, or Ethernet), and the capacity is only limited by the size of hard drives presently available and the user's budget.

The Ximeta NetDisk is an example of an external hard drive that provides a user the option of connecting an additional 80GB, 120GB, or 160GB of storage to their system by using either a USB 2.0 or Ethernet connection. Installation for such a device is rather simple, and may involve the installation of some basic software, as well as making the necessary connections between the computer and the external enclosure.

The capacity of external hard drives makes them ideal for backing up large volumes of data, and many of these devices simplify the process by including software (or hardware) features to automate the backup.

For example, some Seagate External drives feature a "one-button" backup option right on the case.In addition to being a convenient method of backing up large volumes of files locally, most external hard drives are compact enough to be portable. The inclusion of a common data transfer interface, such as USB, allows an external hard drive to be connected to just about any modern computer for data transfer, or for more than one computer to share the external hard drive as a back up.

4. Additional Hard Drives

By simply adding an additional hard drive to you system, you can protect yourself from data loss by copying it from your primary drive to your secondary drive. The installation of a second hard drive isn't difficult, but does require a basic understanding of the inner working of a computer, which may scare off some users. We do offer a "how-to" section on our site for many tasks such as installing a hard drive into a computer system.

To take the installation of a second hard drive to another level of security and reliability, the hard drives may be installed in a RAID array. RAID stands for a Redundant Array of Independent (or Inexpensive) Disks, and can be configured in several manners. A thorough discussion of RAID and all of its variations would be an article all by itself, but what may be of interest to this discussion is what is known as RAID 1. A RAID 1 array requires two hard drives of equal size to be installed on a RAID controller, which will then mirror one drive to the other in real time. Many motherboards now come with RAID controllers onboard, but the addition of a PCI slot controller card, such as the Silicon Image Sil0680, is an inexpensive purchase that will add RAID to any system. With a RAID 1 array in place, if one hard drive should ever fail, the system won't miss a best by continuing to run on the remaining good drive, and alert the user that one drive may need to be replaced.

5. Online Storage

Online services, such as Xdrive, allow users to upload their files to a server for safe keeping. Although it may be convenient to have the data available wherever an internet connection is available, there are a few limitations.

The services generally charge a monthly fee relative to the amount of storage space required. At Xdrive, for example, 5GB of storage costs $9.95 per month, which can quickly add up to more than one would spend on any of the other options discussed.

Security is supposed to be very tight on these services, but no matter how secure it may seem, it is still just a password keeping prying eyes from your potentially sensitive documents.

The speed of your internet connection will also weigh heavily on the convenience of your backup, and no matter what type of connection you have; it can't compete with local data transfer rates.

Final Words

Although not a comprehensive list of options available for backing up your data, the five items listed provide some simple and relatively affordable means to ensure that your data is not lost. Data loss is an extremely frustrating and potentially costly situation, but one that can be avoided.

Cisco certification candidates are introduced to BGP at the CCNP level, but the reaction to its introduction always reminds me of something I see often as the CCNA level.

Whenever I teach distance-vector protocols in my Ultimate CCNA Boot Camp or Fast Track classes, I make sure my students understand the many rules of distance-vector routing thoroughly. After that, we move on to OSPF and link-state routing.

And what do I tell my students before we move on to OSPF and link-state? "Take all that great stuff you just learned about distance-vector routing and put it aside, because none of it applies here!"

That's about the time I get astonished looks and a few things thrown at me. :)

What's this got to do with BGP? Well, when you start studying BGP, you have to put a lot of preconceptions aside. It sounds like just another routing protocol, like RIP or OSPF, but it's not.

So... before we start studying BGP and looking at some of its many features, let's take a look at what BGP is and what it's not.

What BGP Does And Who Uses It

If you're in a position where you're used to seeing or working with routing protocols such as EIGRP and OSPF, you're probably now working with BGP. BGP is not a protocol you're going to configure at the office LAN.

BGP is used to connect autonomous systems, which are very large "collections" of networks. (Those of you who have studied IGRP and EIGRP are familiar with the concepts of an AS.)

As opposed to routing protocols such as EIGRP and OSPF, BGP is an exterior routing protocol. BGP is not used to find a specific network instead, it's used to find the AS where that given network can be found.

A good way to look at it is that networks are contained in Autonomous Systems BGP helps you find the AS where a given network is found. Routing protocols such as OSPF and EIGRP take it from there.

BGP Terminology

You'll be happy to know that BGP has a terminology all its own. Well, you might not be happy about it, but it does! I'm not going to throw a bunch of terms at you right now, since these terms are better introduced to you when you can see what they do. Having said that, here are a couple of basic BGP terms that will help you make the transition from IGPs to BGP.

aggregation - This is just the BGP term for summarization.

IGP - Interior Gateway Protocol. These are routing protocols that run within an Autonomous System, such as OSPF and EIGRP.

EGP - Exterior Gateway Protocol. Remember from your CCNA studies that EIGRP routes are indicated by the letter "D" in your routing table? Ever wonder why? EGP, that's why. Run show ip route and take a look at the routing table key. EGP was BGP's predecessor, and is still in the routing table. EGP was there before EIGRP, so that's why "E" in the routing table doesn't indicate an EIGRP route.

We'll be adding to this list a great deal in the next few weeks.

Now that you've got a grasp on the differences between BGP and the IGPs you've been working with up to this point, it's time to start looking at some basic BGP concepts and configurations. Look for Part II of this BGP tutorial over the next few days!

A few years back my husband and I were burdened by credit card debt. The one thing that compounded the problem was late fees. In some cases our balance was doubled by additional late fees. We had so many cards that we could not keep track of what was due when. If you use Quicken�½ to manage your bank accounts it also has bill pay built into it and will automatically send instructions to your bank for each online payment you have.

When you take advantage of these useful tools the bank sends a check or Electronic Funds Payment (EFT) to make the payment for you. You can schedule one payment or a series of payments to recur every month. 1. The difference between the balance and the reduced negotiated amount is reported as 1099 income by the credit card companies. So you'll have to pay income tax on the forgiven amount.

2. It will create a negative item on your credit score.

Use this tactic very carefully and consult with your financial advisor or attorney.

Using any or all of these strategies can go a long way toward managing your credit cards. The important thing is to be consistent and don't have more cards in your wallet than you can manage properly.

On the occasions you delivered the perfect strike; blocked without the need to think or performed a near flawless kata, did it feel difficult? Or did you get the sense it happened by itself? The &zone' is a place where athletes describe this sort of experience. Studies suggest its a state of &effortless merging of action and awareness'. So what stops us from getting there? Factors such as stress or attempts to try harder can interfere. Often our efforts to train harder result in unnecessary muscular responses that prevent us reaching the effortless state of the zone.

How you perform a technique and how much effort you use depends on how you have done it before. The process of repeating a technique many times lays down the pattern at a subconscious level until it can be executed with minimal thought. But can you be sure that what you have learnt is the most efficient? Try these two experiments.

Experiment 1

1. Fold your arms and look to see which hand is tucked.

2. Now reverse the pattern, fold them the opposite way.

3. Notice the difference and your reaction to it.

The pattern in step 1 is your habitual &folding the arms' programme that is activated without conscious thought and will feel familiar and comfortable. The pattern in step 2 requires some thought to achieve and will probably feel wrong, as this is different from your usual preference. This shows how strong the force of habit can be. Not only does it select the pattern of the movement in step 1 but also determines what feels right and wrong in relation to position and movement. There is nothing wrong with the pattern in step 2, but is it a move you would choose to do automatically? Probably not, because you will only perform movements that feel right. However, when you do what feels right you engage habitual movement patterns; those performed often enough to establish the habit.

Experiment 2

1. Sit on a chair and get ready to stand up.

2. Before you move, observe what preparations you want to make. Do you hold your breath? Do you push forward with the lower back and raise the chest? Do the muscles in your neck stiffen and pull back the head? Do you feel the need to push with your hands on your legs? Spend a little time to study this before attempting the next step.

3. Now try to stand up from the chair without doing what you have just noted (it may be necessary to ask someone to observe your actions to give you feedback). How far can you execute the move before one, or all of these patterns appear?

To successfully execute the last step can be difficult because the usual preparations you make are a part of your habitual &getting out of a chair' program and are ready to go before you even begin to move. You would not attempt to start the move until the familiar conditions such as the sensation of muscle tension associated with the act are present. From a mechanical point of view the common actions mentioned in the second step actually reduce the efficiency of the movement. If your preparation and subsequent actions for this exercise are unnecessary, why do you do them?

Do the techniques of your martial art contain inefficient movements? Do they feel right because they are good or purely because they are a comfortable habit?

THE ZONE

It is my belief that our natural state is to be in the zone. Diligent practice of the martial arts can help us to experience this shift of consciousness. The zone is an altered state where things can happen with little or no perceived effort. In these moments our response appears to precede conscious thought and is executed near to perfection; right timing, right effort and entirely appropriate to the situation.

I am sure we have all experienced moments like this. For example, in one competition I scored ippon with a jodan mawashi geri to the side of my opponents exposed face. Afterwards my opponent congratulated me on my technique commenting he didn't see it coming, to which I could honestly reply, "Neither did I". I was only aware of the execution of the technique once my leg has started its recoil. Where had it come from? At some level my senses had registered the target, selected the most appropriate technique, fired it off, made the lightest of contact and started the recovery before I had become aware of it! This was probably my 'finest hour'. But how can we be capable of such remarkable feats one moment and be totally incompetent the next - I lost the next round and was appallingly slow.

Whilst the patterns (techniques) residing at a subconscious level can be called upon with incredible speed and effectiveness, I believe this can only happen if we are in a balanced state. Another word for this is poise, this is not to be confused with posture. Poise is a state of totally appropriate activity, both at a muscular and 'mental' level. When we are in this state there is 'optimum integration of the postural reflexes, consciousness and appropriate use of learnt patterns'. That is, we can get out of the way and let the processes just happen. Nerves, tension and stress will interfere with this process if we allow ourselves to react negatively to these situations such as stiffening the neck, an action that will impede the balance reflexes. Likewise, over-confidence has a similar affect of preventing the unity of self and action as, in my view, it will reduce our level of alertness and state of readiness. The ego really should be left at the door of the dojo!

So perhaps to heighten our chances of getting into the zone we need to focus on 'being in the moment'. Only by being consciously aware of the moment or 'the here and now' can we ensure inappropriate muscular activity is not present in our actions. This takes time and involves going back to some very basic movements (pre-martial art techniques) such as everyday simple activities and zazen to experience a stillness and awareness that will help in more demanding activities.

The you angle feeds a person's sense of "what's in it for me and how can I benefit"? This mindset, I feel, carries over into all phases of one's life creating an environment of constantly coveting self fulfillment.

So with this said, how does one break this powerful mold the media injects daily onto you?

First, recognition of what is right and wrong is a good place to start because

In this instance, logical thinking must be implemented in order to understand that aspects of dysfunction are infiltrating now, and have in the past. Well, you might think one person's trash could be considered another's treasure, so how would a certain aspect of one's life be blanketed as dysfunctional?

Logic!

If a person enables dysfunctional behavior, then the people they enable will eventually catch on to this and know that you will always permit it, so the cycle continues.

Using your God-given logic will always assist you in diagnosing a scenario that is littered with dysfunction, or one that has the potential to bring it into your life.

If you are a person who thinks more with their heart than their head, this needs to change immediately! Many of the times we are hurt by thinking with our heart, and in turn the consequences can be quite costly.

Taking control of how much negative comes into your life is the basis for this article. I want the reader to understand that they do have power to not only make changes, however painful they might be, but dam up the flow that a river of illogic and dysfunction causes.

By recognizing dysfunction, you limit its growth at its root and logically understand its negative characteristics. This gives you more than enough ammunition to stave off its constant barrage. So start to control the damage dysfunction brings today rather than settling for a more inferior quality of life.

Now that the idea of doing business over the internet has been firmly established, many potential internet businessmen are searching for the best way to do business. Usually the choice comes down to whether you want to set up your own business and online store, or sign up for an affiliate program.

First of all, let's define what we mean by an affiliate program. An affiliate program is basically an internet business set up by someone else. They could be selling physical goods, education, information or any other products that can be sold online. By signing up as their affiliate, you are helping them promote their business or store. In return, they will pay you a commission for each sale you bring them. The amount of commission varies between different affiliate programs. Examples of affiliate programs include Amazon.com and Wordtracker.

1) EARNINGS

So how does an affiliate program differ from starting your own online store? Let's start by looking at the potential earnings. (After all, the main reason everyone wants to start an internet business is for the money). When you sign up for an affiliate program, you will be paid a commission for each sale you refer to the online store. This commission can range from 5% to 15% for physical products, and possibly up to 50% or more for virtual products such as subscriptions and ebooks.

On the other hand, if you start your own store, your profit can be much higher. For virtual products, your profit can be 100% of your selling price. After all, once the newsletter or ebook is created, you do not need to spend any more effort. When someone buys your ebook, they just download it from your website. If you are selling a physical product, your profit depends on whether you are manufacturing the product yourself, or buying from a wholesaler or dropshipping company. Your profit in this case could easily be more than 40% or 50%.

So, if you only consider the potential earnings, starting your own business is more lucrative than joining an affiliate program.

2) LOGISTICS

However, money isn't everything (Or so they say). When you are starting your own internet business, there are a number of logistic issues you need to look at. Here are a few things you would need to take care of:

a) Create your website

b) Design your product (if you are selling new products)

c) Create your product (if you are selling new physical products, or any virtual products)

d) Set up an online store

e) Set up a merchant account or payment gateway

f) Set up a warehouse or storage space (if you are selling physical products)

g) Have procedures and staff ready to fulfill orders

h) Set up an affiliate program to get others to market the products for you

i) Monitor for fraud

j) Monitor stock levels

As they say, "No pain, no gain". Having your own store pays very well, but requires a substantial time investment from you.

On the other hand, if you sign up for an affiliate program, all you need to do is set up a website to promote the program. All the ads, banners, marketing text etc will be provided to you by the affiliate program. Your only responsibilities would be to get people to visit your website, and hopefully click on the affiliate links to buy the products that you are promoting.

3) CONVERSION

Whether you have your own business or are promoting an affiliate program, the bottom line is the conversion rate, or the percentage of visitors that actually buy something from you. A number of factors influence this conversion rate. Factors as quality of the product, quality of the website, customer support are all important. However, I personally believe that the most important factor is trust.

When a potential customer arrives at your website, he will need to trust your site enough for him to be willing to buy from you. After all, on the internet you are just a faceless salesman. He doesn't know who is actually running the site and whether he will actually get the goods that he orders.

Having said that, one of the key methods of garnering trust is by recommendation and referral. If a store is being referred to or recommended by another website, the potential customer will feel that the store is trustworthy. After all, if the store is not trustworthy, why would the other website recommend it?

I cried the day they took a biopsy and I cried with relief the day I was told it was benign. I cried many times as I watched my sister die.

I got so frustrated having to get up every night 3-4 times due to my prostate troubles and then finding I couldn't get back to sleep.

What is prostate cancer?

Prostate Cancer develops by the growth of cancerous cells within the prostate gland. Prostate cancer occurs when some of the cells that make up the prostate gland escape from the normal controls on their growth and start to divide, grow and spread in an uncontrolled manner. In its advanced form, it can produce the same symptoms as BPH. (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia)

Warning Signs

Early prostate cancer often does not cause symptoms. When symptoms of prostate cancer do occur, they may include some of the following problems:

A need to urinate frequently, especially at night; Difficulty starting urination or holding back urine; Inability to urinate; Weak or interrupted flow of urine; Painful or burning urination; Painful ejaculation; Blood in urine or semen; and/or Frequent pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips, or upper thighs.

Any of these symptoms may be caused by cancer or by other, less serious health problems, such as BPH or an infection (Prostatitis). Only a doctor can tell the cause. A man who has symptoms like these should see his family doctor . Do not wait to feel pain; early prostate cancer does not cause pain.

These are two other main prostate problems

1) BPH - (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia) is the abnormal growth of benign prostate cells. In an enlarged prostate , the prostate grows larger and pushes against the urethra and bladder, blocking the normal flow of urine. BPH is often the result of prostatitis.

2) Prostatitis refers to prostate inflammation and infection, which can be brief or long-lasting, mild or severe symptoms can include frequent, urgent and painful urination, erectile problems or pain >during ejaculation.

Prostatitis is rampant in the US, affecting at least 80% of American men. Most is without major symptoms. Prostate enlargement, called Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH) is often the result of prostatitis.

Treatment for Prostate Cancer

The treatment given for prostate cancer depends on how advanced or widespread the disease is. If the cancer is small and only present within the prostate gland, it is possible to treat it with

surgery (radical prostatectomy) radiotherapy (either external beam radiotherapy or brachytherapy) hormone therapy

I attended a workshop last weekend and the speaker said if you are serious in making big money, you've got to play, not work.

He further explained that if you work, you can only make small money. That's what most people end up with. Making small money by working.

This point is best illustrated by studying the Chinese character for play. The character has two parts: one consists of the character "King" and the other is "Money".

By combining these two parts, it becomes "King of Money." And in turn, "King of Money" forms the word "Play."

Hence, play is the "King of Money."

That's the interesting part about Chinese characters. The wisdom in the character "Play" is

if you want to make big money, you must be able to enjoy the process of wealth creation.

If you don't enjoy the process and you treat the process as another piece of work, you can't make a lot of money.

You must truly enjoy playing the game of wealth creation. By playing, you feel more energetic, full of passion, and young at heart.

Remember, life is meant to be enjoyed and there is no room for unhappy moments. Enjoy the process and achieve your goals of financial success, just like another round of game.

Have you worked on creating a household budget that you can stick to? For example purposes lets say that you have a cell phone bill that averages $75 dollars per month. You could potentially save several hundreds of dollars to apply to other debts that require payment. Adjusting your budget may even allow you to pay more than needed therefore getting yourself out of debt sooner than initially thought.

Employment -

Few of us want to work more. Work is one of those things that we know needs to be done however it's not always the brightest way to spend our days. However I recommend that you look at your schedule to determine if you are capable of finding a short time job to help pay back your debts, or at least give you the head start needed to help you gain control of your finances and possibly avoid bankruptcy. Would working an additional 20 hours a week for 3 months give you the financial lift needed to reduce your debts to the point where when coupled with a restructured household budget give you the lift needed to resolve your debts on your own? For example let's say you are able to pick up a part time job at $7.50 per hour for 20 hours per week. Let's say your taxes are 25% of your gross pay. You would end up netting $450 per month. This might not seem like much, however if you do this for three months you could apply $1350 dollars towards your total debt. If you add that along with the money you potentially saved after reviewing your household budget this could lead to an additional $1950 dollars that you may be able to apply towards your outstanding debt based on an average of a $200 monthly savings from your newly created budget plan.

Secured Debt -

In some situation bankruptcy may be able to be avoided if an individual looks at their secured debt and can find if they may be able to reduce their monthly payments through consolidation or refinancing. For example let's say you have a car payment that runs you around $350 dollars per month and you have a house payment that runs you $1000 per month. These two purchases together will drain $1350 per month from your account. If you speak to a bank or a credit union ask them if they have refinancing options available that will leave you with a lower monthly payment and a lower interest rate. This option should be used as a last resort as you are creating a loan to replace another loan in which you will most likely pay a lengthier term on.

Credit Counseling -

Try speaking to a debt reduction service regarding your financial situation. It is important to make sure that the company you are speaking with is a credit counseling company in good standing with the Better Business Bureau and offers you free advice without pushing you into a debt repayment plan. The company you speak to should review with you all of your options before making the determination that there service is needed.

By looking into these options you may save yourself from declaring bankruptcy and harming your creditworthiness for up to ten years. Although bankruptcy is an option, it should be the last option as it does more damage than good in many cases.

A dose of vitamin C may give a quick boost to the poorer-than-average blood circulation seen in healthy young smokers, a study suggests. The study of 25 healthy men found that although smokers initially showed poorer results on a test of blood flow to the heart that changed after they took a large dose - 2 grams - of vitamin C.

taking the vitamin, the 13 smokers showed blood circulation on par with that of the 12 non-smokers, according to findings published in a leading heart journal.

However, lest smokers think they can undo heart damage by chasing a cigarette with a vitamin C pill, the researchers say their findings underline the dangers of smoking.

Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant, a substance that helps clear the body of cell-damaging molecules called oxygen free radicals. Because of this, it's thought that the vitamin may counter the "oxidative stress" that smoking puts on the lining of the blood vessels - a mechanism by which smoking leads to artery disease.

The new study looked at the effect

of oral vitamin C on coronary flow velocity reserve (CFVR), a measure of how well blood flow speeds up to help the heart when it's under high demands. Past research has shown that smokers show poorer blood-vessel dilation in response to blood flow, and have a diminished CFVR.

The research team used a non-invasive ultrasound technique to measure CFVR in smokers and non-smokers, before and after they took vitamin C. They found that before taking the vitamin, smokers had a lower CFVR than non-smokers did. Two and four hours after the dose of vitamin C, however, smokers' average CFVR was "restored" to a more-normal level.

Though the men in the study were given a large dose of vitamin C, researchers pointed out that it's probably useless to take doses beyond 200 milligrams, because the body will excrete the excess.

Moreover, it's not clear that loading up on vitamin C can benefit smokers. Some trials have found that taking C supplements does not improve smokers' blood vessel function, at least in the short term.

Researchers said further, large-scale trials should look at whether daily vitamin C supplements cut smokers' long-term risk of coronary artery disease.

Let's first define insanity. It is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. And that is what most investors do and they can't understand why they are not able to make money in the stock market.

Do these investors need a psychiatrist, a psychologist, a talk with their minister or none of the above? I know, you think they should talk to their broker or their financial planner. Believe me, folks, these two are part of the problem and not the solution.

If they knew the answers everyone would be rich.

Let's go back and look at who taught these mavens how to invest. The Wall Street brokerage houses taught them or rather did not teach them the most basic rules of the game. Why? Because brokerage houses want you to buy (for commission) and they do not want you to sell even though that means another commission. There are two basic reasons they don't want you to sell and it has nothing to do with that one selling commission.

If you sell you might take your money out of your account and that is one of the things the Maul Street crowd never wants to happen, but the most important is they make money when your account is invested. It is not a lot, but it in a nice steady 1% or more. You are their unspoken collateral in the worldwide money shuffle.

Any broker who suggests a customer sell is usually chastised in some way or just plain fired. A broker who allows large sums of cash to accumulate in customers accounts is told to invest (?) it or hit the road. The house (that's the brokerage firm) does not want to see customers with big cash balances although there are times when that is exactly where they should be. Remember 2000 to 2003? During that three year period wouldn't it have been better for your account to have had no stock or fund positions?

Brokers or financial planners are not taught simple methods to protect customer funds. And I mean simple. Too many folks during the 2000 debacle lost 40% of their money and more.

There was absolutely no reason for this if basic money management techniques were instituted.

Customers could be made aware that they should not give back more than 10%, maybe as much as 15%, of their portfolio value when the stock market goes in the tank. That occurs on a regular basis. Declines in equities of 20% to 40% happen regularly and no customer should be mesmerized into holding during those periods.

During the 2000-2001 period there were less than 3% recommendations by brokers to sell and those sells were after the stock had crashed about 80% to 90%. It is too late then. Your money is gone. If brokers and financial planners had been taught to advise people to place 10% stop loss orders their retirement accounts they would be much fatter today.

Stop doing the same thing over and over again because of bad advice. Learn to sell when your position goes negative. Don't be one of the insane.

Many sites use plenty of bright and shiny gimmicks to attract you, but once you make it through to the content of the site it's just not worthy. A good site uses easy navigation, relevant content, and interactive media like comments and message boards. If you're fortunate, whoever builds your site may even have a few tricks up their sleeves to make it really fun with sound, video, and other interactive fun stuff.

Do you want people to come to your site and then tell their friend and family about it? Do you want to have huge amounts of visitors? Do you want to succeed in making your dreams come to fruition on the Web? Make your website exciting! It might be easier said than done, but there are people around whose job it is to construct and design sites for a living. If you can afford it, go for the best. How great is it when you come across a site that has some special feature that you've never seen elsewhere? Isn't it great when you find a site that relates to one of your interests that is simple and easy to get to the information you want? If you want to have people to come back again and again, you've got to keep updating the content to keep it fresh and interesting. Should the market turn against you, it is important that you design a system that will produce as much loss as you are prepared to take. This loss, known as drawdown, is the maximum amount by which your trading float will temporarily drop at anytime. Doing this in advance, will help you avoid nasty surprises in the future. This gives you the confidence to continue trading when the good times start once more.

It is very unlikely that you will stop trading if your system is trading profitably. However, if you are in a trading

year that takes too big a loss, you are likely to stop trading, even if your system has been tested and shown to make a profit over a longer time period. Therefore, design a system based on the risk you are prepared to take which includes a budget for your drawdown.

So how does one pick the best formula for your drawdown time? I will rephrase this question. How many losses in a row should you allow for?

First, I will use the simple example of tossing a coin. If I tossed a coin and it landed "Heads Up" 10 times in a row, are you surprised? However, if I tossed the coin 800 times, your outlook on the results are different.

Trading uses the same scenario. When testing your trading system over many years, you will find a run of 10 losers or 10 winners in a row. Mathematics provides some answers to the likelihood of this happening.

See the examples given in the table below:

A typical trend following a system has a 50:50 win: loss ratio. That is, half of the trades are winners and half losers. This is not a problem, because winning trades will make a larger profit than losing trades will make a loss.

A 50:50 system has a 1% chance of seeing seven losses in a row. Therefore, most trend following systems should budget between five and nine losses in a row. The good news is that there is the same chance of getting between five and nine winners in a row!

I hope you see the importance of making these decisions before you begin trading. Making the proper decisions before you start is what successful trading is all about.

The human body benefits from sun exposure. And a little bit of tan protects you from the sun. Right? Wrong!

The body does indeed benefit from sun exposure. But a little bit of tan does not necessarily protect you from the sun. Let's see why.

The sun's rays are a major source of vitamin D and help the body's systems acquire much needed calcium for building healthy bones. However, most people don't need to spend large amounts of time exposed to the sun in order to get their required amount of vitamin D.

In fact, the body's health can actually suffer negative effects when it's exposed too long to the sun's rays, especially if it's unprotected. Results can vary from skin and eye damage to immune system suppression and ultimately cancer, even for the young.

So let's look at the basic facts about sun exposure.

There are three kinds of invisible ultraviolet (UV) rays in the sun that reaches earth: UVA, UVB, and UVC. When these rays come in contact with our skin, affects of UVA and UVB can be - tans, burns and other reactions (e.g. like acne and cancer).

It's also notable that the effects of all UV rays are not the same. Depending upon the season, time of day and place on the planet in relation to the sun - (i.e. your altitude and latitude), the rays' intensities vary. For example, during summertime, UV rays are at their strongest. Between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., the rays are strongest. And close to the equator and at high altitudes (where air and cloud cover are less, resulting in increased harmful penetration of UV rays into the environment), the rays are also strongest.

In order to protect ourselves from the harmful UV rays, let's look at the skin's first defense - melanin.

Melanin is a chemical present in a variety of colors and concentrations in most people's skin that helps with defense from the sun. Melanin reacts with UV rays and absorbs them. Or rather, to be more specific, the rays act upon melanin, causing the melanin to spread out or grow, increasing its presence in response to the sun's exposure. The result? A &sun tan'. The darker the skin color, the more melanin the skin has for protection. And &tanning' for darker color is included here; &color' does not have to refer to just the original skin color.

A word of caution...

Tanning may look great on the surface, - but the amount and length of time a person is exposed to the sun, determines the amount of possible damage. It also determines the future risk of damage that's likely.

For example, people who are exposed to the sun in huge doses like ship crews, field workers and beach surfers, are at higher risks for skin damage than indoor workers. What happens is that when the amount of UV exposure is greater than what the skin's melanin can handle, sunburn can result. And those with lighter, fairer skin, who have less melanin, absorb less UV, suffering less protection.

Since research has shown that UV damage from the sun is the main cause of skin cancer, (with as high as 20% of some populations developing skin cancer during their lifetime), we need to take a proactive approach in relation to sun exposure to avoid harmful skin damage.

As we say colloquially here in Australia - "Slip, Slop, Slap". (I.e. &Slip' on a shirt, &Slop' on a hat, &Slap' on a sunscreen). Look after the skin you've got, because you're the one who will be living with it!
